He shared a memorable encounter where a large male orca with an impressive dorsal fin scared away a known five-meter male white shark named Dragon. The research team utilized acoustic telemetry data and sightings from tourism companies to track shark movements over 12 years. They identified six instances of prolonged absences, including a brief five-day departure during an orca sighting in October 2024 and a four-day absence following the death of a tagged whale. Interestingly, not every orca encounter or shark death resulted in these extended absences.
Reeves highlighted the highly variable movement patterns of great white sharks in the Neptune Islands. She emphasized that long gaps in their presence can occur with or without orca activity, making it challenging to pinpoint a single cause.
