Get ready to witness history! The Washington Monument is set to become the world's largest birthday candle this New Year's Eve, kicking off the United States' 250th-anniversary celebrations!
This isn't just any light show; it's a symbolic transformation, orchestrated by the Freedom 250 organization, aiming to honor the American spirit and the nation's rich past. Starting at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on New Year's Eve, the monument will be illuminated with stunning projections. These visual displays will narrate key moments in American history, from the nation's founding to its aspirations for the future. The monument itself will morph into a 250-foot-tall birthday candle, counting down the days until the big 2026 milestone.
As Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, put it, this event is the beginning of a momentous year. It's an invitation to every American, and every friend of America, to join in the historic celebration.
Freedom 250, a nonpartisan organization, was established with the goal of spearheading the events to commemorate America's 250th birthday in 2026. They're working closely with the White House and other federal agencies to plan a series of commemorative events.
The public is invited to witness this spectacular display, free of charge, with projections continuing through the following Monday. Each night will feature different visual narratives, exploring themes such as discovery, the American Revolution, independence, Western expansion, the Industrial Revolution, and the modern era, culminating in a glimpse into the future of the U.S.
The New Year's Eve event is just the first in a series of planned celebrations. Expect a drone and fireworks show to add to the festive atmosphere. Previews of the projections have already been visible on the monument, with testing commencing earlier in December.
But here's where it gets controversial... The plans for the celebration extend beyond this initial event. Freedom 250 is also organizing a Great American State Fair in June and a parade of ships from over 30 countries in New York Harbor for the Fourth of July.
Adding to the festivities, the iconic Times Square Ball in New York City will also get a patriotic makeover. After midnight Eastern Standard Time, the ball will light up in red, white, and blue, with 2,000 pounds of confetti in matching colors raining down.
America250, a nonpartisan commission created by Congress in 2016, is also involved in commemorating this special year.
