"Congress Could Be a Key Partner," Claims Actor Vijay's TVK, But There’s a Twist

Actor and politician Vijay, who hails from Tamil Nadu, has hinted strongly at potential alliances for the upcoming assembly elections through his political party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Although the party has been relatively discreet about its affiliations, recent statements from its national spokesperson, Felix Gerald, have shed light on a possible collaboration with the Congress party.
Gerald remarked, "The Congress and TVK share a natural alignment regarding secular values and our mutual opposition to communalism. This connection positions us as inherent allies. Additionally, Rahul Gandhi and our leader maintain a friendly relationship."
However, it’s not all straightforward, according to Gerald. He noted that several issues must be addressed before any formal agreement can be reached. He attributed the current impasse to certain obstacles within the Tamil Nadu Congress unit.
"There are numerous opportunities for collaboration between the Congress and TVK. Nonetheless, it appears that the personal interests—potentially financial or business-related—of the current leadership within the Tamil Nadu Congress committee may be hindering the initiation of discussions with TVK," the spokesperson elaborated.
If TVK aligns with Congress, it could significantly strengthen the support base among minority groups and anti-BJP voters for both parties. However, any arrangement regarding seat-sharing is still uncertain, and there remains ambiguity over the hierarchy of leadership within a potential alliance.
Signs of a budding partnership were evident last month when Congress members participated in a TVK event on December 25.
Vijay, who founded TVK in October 2024, aims to establish it as a formidable alternative in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. The ruling DMK, under Chief Minister MK Stalin, has dismissed Vijay's political aspirations as not posing a notable threat.
In a related development, reports surfaced last month indicating that former chief minister O Panneerselvam is leaning toward an alliance between his party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Thondarkal Urimai Meetpu Kazhagam (AIADMTUMK), and Vijay's TVK, especially following failed attempts to reunite with the AIADMK.
A significant number of AIADMTUMK members expressed their willingness to transition to TVK, led by Vijay, as a strategy to counter the influence of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who has rebuffed multiple overtures for reconciliation.
