Two Hikers Complete a 1 Year, 10,000+ Mile Thru Hike: The Final Day (2026)

Imagine waking up to the final day of an extraordinary journey, a journey that pushed the boundaries of what most would consider possible. This is the story of two hikers, Slide and Peg Leg, as they embark on the last leg of their 10,000-mile odyssey, a feat that has only been accomplished by a handful of others before them.

It's a crisp morning in Big Pine Key, and the air is filled with anticipation. Peg Leg reflects on how this day marks the completion of a year-long adventure, a journey that began in the same vicinity a year ago. The goal was ambitious: to hike over 10,000 miles in a calendar year, a challenge that only a few have dared to attempt and even fewer have succeeded in achieving.

But here's where it gets controversial: the nature of the journey. While some might argue that the last few thousand miles were more akin to an ultra-marathon, Peg Leg and Slide maintain that their journey was a testament to the power of the human spirit, a blend of hiking, backpacking, and sheer determination.

As they pack up, Peg Leg can't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude. A year ago, the idea of completing such a monumental task seemed like a distant dream. Yet, here they are, about to hit the terminus in Key West, with Slide also achieving the incredible milestone of 10,000 miles hiked for the year.

The journey hasn't been without its challenges. Peg Leg recalls a time earlier in the year when an injury threatened to derail their plans. But, like a true warrior, they begged the universe for healing and vowed to suffer in silence if given the chance to continue. And the universe, it seems, listened.

"Getting injured back in May was the best thing that could have ever happened to me," Peg Leg reflects. "It humbled me and made me appreciate every obstacle I faced."

As they set off, the day is filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, but also a lingering question: what comes next after achieving such an incredible feat?

"I spent a lot of the day thinking about those questions and what they mean for me," Peg Leg shares. "This year has shown me that I'm capable of anything I set my mind to."

The day passes quickly, and as they near the end of their journey, Peg Leg is joined by a special guest, Sparkle, who is about to embark on her own 10,000-mile adventure. It's a moment of passing the torch, a symbolic gesture that highlights the community and support within the hiking world.

As they approach Key West, the atmosphere is electric. Slide's brother, Eric, joins them for a while, and they even run into another hiker, Gram's, who Peg Leg knows from their AT hike in 2023.

"It's so great to see familiar faces and know that I'm part of this incredible community," Peg Leg says.

As they near the southernmost point, Slide and Peg Leg decide to add a bonus mile or two to ensure they surpass the 10,000-mile mark. It's a fitting end to their journey, a testament to their dedication and resilience.

When they finally reach the monument, it's a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, but also a bit of anxiety as onlookers try to understand the magnitude of their achievement.

"I think most of my hikes have ended in a way that's a bit anticlimactic," Peg Leg reflects. "But this, this is different. It's a feeling of accomplishment, but also a sense of wonder at what I've just achieved."

And what an achievement it is! Peg Leg is the first woman to ever hike/backpack over 10,000 miles in a single year, a feat that has left many, including Peg Leg herself, in awe.

"It feels like I dozed off one day and woke up here, touching this monument after hiking over 10,000 miles," Peg Leg muses.

As they spend time at the monument, celebrating with cake and laughter, Peg Leg can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. It's been a long journey, and they've pushed themselves to the limit. But now, it's time to rest and reflect.

"I'm ready to sleep in and enjoy some time off," Peg Leg says. "It's been a wild ride, and I'm grateful for every second of it."

So, what's next for Peg Leg and Slide? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: their journey has inspired many, and their story will continue to live on, encouraging others to push their limits and embrace the unknown.

And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about the destination, it's about the journey and the growth that comes with it. So, what do you think? Are you inspired by their story? Do you think you could embark on a journey like this? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
