In a significant move for their 2026 football season, Ole Miss has bolstered its defensive backfield once again by securing a top safety transfer. This development is part of a broader strategy, as eight out of the nine new transfers joining the team are focused on enhancing the defense.
On Saturday, the Rebels proudly announced that Florida State safety Edwin Joseph has committed to their program, marking a pivotal addition to their secondary. Joseph, who just completed his redshirt sophomore year, will bring two years of eligibility to Ole Miss. His arrival is particularly exciting as it represents the third transfer signing for the secondary this season.
In addition to Joseph, Ole Miss is also welcoming back cornerbacks Jaylon Braxton and Antonio Kite, adding further depth to their defensive lineup.
Standing at an impressive 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, Joseph spent three seasons with the Seminoles before opting to enter the transfer portal in mid-December. His time in Tallahassee was marked by solid performance—he recorded 51 tackles (27 solo), achieved eight pass breakups, registered 1.5 sacks, forced one fumble, and intercepted four passes. Notably, in 2025, Joseph had a standout year where he made 37 tackles, broke up five passes, and created four turnovers, including three interceptions, across ten starts.
Joseph is highly regarded in recruitment circles, with 247Sports ranking him as the fourth-best safety in this transfer cycle and placing him 73rd overall nationally. Initially, during the 2023 recruiting period, he was rated as a three-star prospect, recognized as the 25th best athlete and 77th overall from Florida.
With Joseph's commitment, he joins an impressive group of eight other transfers in Ole Miss's 2026 class, which includes offensive lineman Carius Curne, linebacker Chris Jones, defensive lineman Michai Boireau, defensive back Sharif Denson, linebacker Keaton Thomas, defensive end Jonathan Maldonado, defensive lineman Jeheim Oatis, and cornerback Jay Crawford. Collectively, this group has been ranked as the seventh best in the nation by 247Sports.
Joseph's scouting report paints a picture of versatility; originally recruited by several schools as a wide receiver, he made the switch to cornerback just before his senior year of high school and quickly found success in coverage. Although he hasn't been measured recently, he previously stood at 6 feet and weighed 170 pounds, boasting an impressive wingspan of nearly 6 feet 6 inches. As a receiver, he excelled at catching short to intermediate routes, demonstrating an ability to exploit defensive gaps and gain significant yardage after making a catch. While he is still honing his skills as a defender, his technique has seen steady improvement, and he appears more at ease in man-to-man coverage, effectively using his hands to disrupt opposing receivers' timing. Additionally, he excels at tracking the ball in the air, showcasing his instinctive playmaking abilities. Despite his strong offensive stats—1,252 yards and 12 touchdowns from a mostly complementary role—there's a compelling argument for him to focus on defense moving forward. Regardless of where he ends up, he is expected to make an immediate impact on special teams due to his athleticism and skill set, as noted by Andrew Ivins, Director of Scouting.
