A bold new chapter in space exploration is about to unfold, and it's led by a Mainer with a dream as big as the universe itself. Jessica Meir, a native of Maine and a NASA astronaut, is set to command the SpaceX Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station.
But here's where it gets controversial... Meir won't be alone on this journey. She'll be joined by a diverse crew, including NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway as pilot, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. NASA has confirmed this unique team, and their mission is nothing short of extraordinary.
The Crew-12 mission, scheduled for no earlier than February 15th, is a long-duration science expedition. It's the 12th crew rotation with SpaceX to the orbiting laboratory, and its purpose is to prepare humanity for future exploration missions to the moon and Mars. This is a critical step in our quest to explore the cosmos and understand our place in it.
Meir, who calls Caribou, Maine her hometown, has been an astronaut since 2013 and holds the distinction of being the first woman from Maine to venture into space. Her first mission to the space station, which began in 2019, lasted an impressive 205 days and saw her orbit the Earth a staggering 3,280 times. During this time, she traveled a mind-boggling 86.9 million miles.
One of the most memorable moments of Meir's first mission was her participation in the first-ever all-female spacewalk alongside fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch. This historic event, during which Meir spent 21 hours and 44 minutes outside the space station, made headlines and inspired generations.
During her six-month mission, Meir was joined for a brief period by another Mainer, Chris Cassidy, who grew up in York. Since then, Meir has taken on various roles at NASA, including assistant to the chief astronaut for commercial crew, deputy for the Flight Integration Division, and assistant to the chief astronaut for the human landing system.
In interviews with the Press Herald, Meir has shared that her dream of becoming an astronaut began at a young age in Aroostook County. From as early as age 5, she spoke of her aspirations to explore space, and in her senior yearbook, she wrote that her goal was to go on a spacewalk. After graduating as valedictorian from Caribou High School, Meir pursued her passion for biology at Brown University, earning a master's degree from the International Space University in France and a doctorate in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego.
After her first spacewalk in 2019, Meir reflected on her experience during a call with President Donald Trump at the White House. She described it as an "incredible feeling" that she would "never forget."
