Just weeks after former England international Eni Aluko accused Ian Wright of monopolizing opportunities for female pundits, she made a surprising move: trademarking her own name. On April 23, Aluko, now 38, sparked a heated debate when she publicly criticized Wright, a broadcasting legend, for his prominent role in women's football coverage. 'I've worked with Ian for a long time, and while he’s undeniably brilliant, I believe he’s acutely aware of how much space he occupies in the women’s game,' she stated. 'He should be more mindful of that.' Aluko argued that broadcasting roles are limited, emphasizing, 'There are only so many spots available, and the competition is fierce.'
As the controversy escalated, with many rallying behind Wright, Aluko took action. On May 13, she filed a trademark application for her name, 'Eni Aluko,' across four distinct categories: media content, decorative and artistic materials, digital file printing, and a broader category covering media relations, promotions, advertising, and retail services. The application was published in the trademark journal on May 29 and officially registered on August 8, according to The Sun.
But this is the part most people miss—the trademark was submitted through Crescenda Sport Ltd, Aluko’s company, which positions itself as a sports careers agency. This raises questions: Is Aluko safeguarding her brand, or is she leveraging her name to create new opportunities in an industry she claims is hostile?
The drama didn’t end there. Earlier this month, Aluko reignited the controversy by suggesting she and former teammate Fara Williams deserved spots on ITV’s Women’s Euro 2025 final coverage, which instead featured Wright alongside Emma Hayes and Karen Carney. Presenter Laura Woods swiftly countered on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the idea that international caps guarantee broadcasting roles. 'Being a great pundit isn’t about how many games you’ve played,' Woods wrote. 'It’s about communication, research, likability, and chemistry with your panel.'
Woods also took issue with the notion that men should be excluded from women’s football coverage, calling the phrase 'the women’s game should be by women for women' deeply damaging. 'This mindset sets back both women’s sport and female punditry,' she warned.
Feeling the heat, Aluko announced her departure from British broadcasting during an appearance on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan programme. 'The UK media space is toxic for me,' she explained. 'Every opinion I share is met with instant backlash. People have already decided they don’t like me.'
Host Simon Jordan didn’t hold back, delivering a blunt critique of Aluko’s media career. 'You’re not particularly enlightening, engaging, or charismatic,' he told her. 'Your language comes across as entitled.'
Aluko has since complained about struggling to find work since the dispute began last year.
