Keane's comments seemed to be a response to a tweet Lisa posted back in 2014, where she defended her husband against Keane's criticism following a Champions League match. Keane, in a playful jibe, suggested that if Carrick didn't perform well in his new role, Lisa could step in as the manager at Old Trafford, given her outspoken nature. During a panel discussion with pundits Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, and Ian Wright, Keane made these comments while they were discussing Carrick's appointment as United's head coach until the end of the season.
Carrick's first game as manager will be a challenging one - a Manchester derby against Manchester City on Saturday. United will then face Arsenal and Fulham in quick succession.
When asked about Keane's remarks, Carrick maintained a calm and professional stance, stating, "It didn't bother me. They're not putting more pressure on me. I don't feel that. There are plenty of opinions around, some positive, some not so much. It's totally irrelevant to what I focus on."
He continued, "I know what we need to improve, how we want to work with the players. There's a lot that can be said, it's just the way things are. I'm not going to pay too much attention to that. For me, the focus is on how we're going to succeed as a team."
This isn't the first time Carrick has stepped into the Old Trafford dugout as a caretaker manager. He previously led the side to two wins and a draw after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure in 2021. He then went on to manage Middlesbrough in the Championship before leaving the club last summer.
